Public Transportation to Sports Venues


PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO SPORTS VENUES
 
All the venues, apart from Rutland Water (Kayaking and Sailing) are served by local bus services, most of which operate at least every 20 minutes).
 
There is a comprehensive network of bus services in Leicester which provides an easy way of getting around and visiting the Games venues. For details of bus services in Leicester and to view the Central Leicestershire Bus Map go to www.leicester.gov.uk/publictransport

Rutland Water
 
Families wishing to visit Rutland Water – where the Sailing and Kayaking events are taking place, should contact the Transport Office if they wish to travel on a special coach link that will operate from St Margaret’s Bus Station, Leicester. Seats on this coach must be pre-booked, please ring 07817 545448 (or 0116 2294433 between 25th & 31st July 2009). Seats on the coach are charged at £10 per family (up to 2 adults and 3 children, £5 per adult and £3 per child).

OTHER METHODS OF TRANSPORTATION
 
INTER-VENUE SHUTTLE
 
Please refer to the Competition Venues Map which you will find in your Family Welcome Pack.
 
BY FOOT
 
Some of the venues are within walking distance of the City Centre.
 
INTER-VENUE SHUTTLE
 
There will be an hourly bus linking each venue with the Games Village.  Families may use this service (which is primarily for athletes) if space is available.  This service will operate from approximately 1000 to 1500 hours from Sunday, 26th July until midday on Friday, 31st July.
 
TAXIS
 
Numerous private taxi companies operate throughout Leicester.  You can stop a taxi in the street or can book one in advance with the help of your hotel or guest house.  Please check availability in advance.
 
BY CAR
 
Because of the scarcity of parking at most Games venues, it is strongly recommended that families do not drive.
 
SPECTATOR TIPS
 
  • Plan your trip ahead of time
  • Allow yourself plenty of time for travel.
  • Expect large crowds – be patient.
  • Check newspapers and radio bulletins during Games for changes to travel arrangements.
