SPECIAL OLYMPICS LEICESTER ATHLETES AND AMBASSADORS CELEBRATE 100 DAYS TO GO

The City of Leicester today celebrated the 100 day countdown to Special Olympics GB National Summer Games Leicester 2009 with ambassadors Alan Birchenall and Stephen Jelley, and athletes Lee Penfold, Rachel Jarvis and Donna Bishop challenging local people to a Wii sports contest in Highcross shopping centre.  

Events from the National Summer Games - tennis, tenpin bowling, golf, athletics - were featured in the Nintendo Wii sports contest and saw the ambassadors and athletes narrowly outwit shoppers. The athletes from Special Olympics East Midlands region were taking time out from their busy training schedules to demonstrate their computer rather than sporting skills.

The organising committee were on hand to remind shoppers that tickets to the Opening Ceremony have recently gone on sale. The Opening Ceremony will host a range of carnival and unique performances commissioned especially for this one off event, involving hundreds of people from Leicestershire bringing the stadium to life.

Steve Humphries, Special Olympics Leicester Games Director, said: “Today was a bit of fun for the athletes, but with only one hundred days to go it was great to see the athletes meet with local people and update them on the Games coming to the city in July. Having some of our high profile ambassadors at the event was a real treat for the local community and Special Olympics athletes, just a taste of what is to come in July.”

Alan Birchenall, Special Olympics Leicester ambassador, added: “Today was great fun, it’s clear that the athletes are naturally gifted in not only sports! Just meeting the athletes and the shoppers it is evident that the whole of Leicester is ready for the National Summer Games. Role on July!”

Adults: (Over 16’s) £5.00 per person
Children:  (Under 16’s) £1.00 per child (only available with a purchase of one adult ticket)
Concessions: £3.00 per person
 
Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from the Leicester City Football Club ticket office through to Saturday, July 25th 2009.
