TESSA JOWELL LAUNCHES SPECIAL OLYMPICS LEICESTER EDUCATION RESOURCE PACK

Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Olympics, today joined Special Olympics ambassador Paul Nixon to visit New College in Leicester to launch a Special Olympics GB Education Resource Pack ahead of Special Olympics GB National Summer Games in Leicester 25th to 31st July.

‘SO Let’s Learn’ is a resource pack for teachers to inspire and educate Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland students and pupils about the Special Olympics and the Games coming to the city. The pack will be available to 500 schools and colleges across the city of Leicester and the county for the start of the Easter term 2009. The pack has been delivered in partnership with Special Olympics Leicester organising committee, Leicester City Council’s Sports Services Free Swims for Children intiative, the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the School Development Support Agency.

The pack contains a variety of lesson activities across all subjects for all ages, Special Olympics themed days with sports events, competitions, assembly ideas and posters. In addition to the educational element and background to the Games, the pack will promote the key values of Special Olympics, which include fairness, tolerance, teamwork and respect, leaving a lasting legacy from the Games in the city.

Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Olympics, said: “The Special Olympics is an inspirational event proving that any one from any walk of life can get involved in sport. The Education Resource Pack will help spread the message of the Special Olympics to young people across Leicestershire giving them an insight into the positive role that sport can play in the lives of people with learning difficulties.”

To support the launch, Special Olympics Leicester ambassadors Tim Stimpson and Alan Birchenall, plus Special Olympics Leicester athlete ambassadors Lee Penfold and Zara Jurenko joined Special Olympics Leicester organising committee to meet with Tessa Jowell and take her through the education pack and the preparations for the Games.

Ted Cassidy MBE, Special Olympics Leicester Chairman, said: “This pack is a fantastic opportunity to not only engage the local students about the Games taking place in their city but also to educate them on the challenges faced by people with learning disabilities. The Games will last only seven days but we want the experiences from the build up to the Games and events themselves to provide a lasting legacy for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and we hope the Schools Resource Pack will be a shining example of this. We are delighted that Tessa Jowell has visited Leicester to add her backing to the educational resource, I also hope she is impressed by the cities ambitious plans, preparation and progress towards the Games.”

Held every four years, the National Summer Games in Leicester is set to be the biggest Games to date. It will attract over 2,700 athletes representing 19 Special Olympics regions across the UK, 1,200 coaches, 1,500 volunteers and 6,000 families to Leicester and Rutland for a week of Olympic-style sports competitions. Special Olympics Patron Gary Lineker and Special Olympics ambassadors David James, Lewis Moody, Martin Corry, Tim Stimpson, Paul Nixon, Steve Walsh and many more are backing the Games.

Special Olympics Great Britain is a charity that provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with learning disabilities. It offers the opportunity for those who participate to develop their physical fitness and motor skills, while achieving greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image.
