MARK SELBY AND THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS LEICESTER ROADSHOW VISITS BABINGTON
Special Olympics Leicester 2009 (SOL) team will be hosting the penultimate community roadshow at Babington Community College on Wednesday 26th November from 6-7pm and 7-8pm, with World No.4 snooker player and SOL Ambassador Mark Selby.
The SOL roadshows provide the latest information to local communities about the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games and how to get involved in the Games next year from signing up as a volunteer, hosting a SOL event and becoming a SOL supporter for the Games which take place from the 25th to the 31st July in Leicester next year.
Leicester-born professional snooker player Mark Selby, nicknamed the ‘Jester from Leicester’, will be present alongside members from the Special Olympics Games Organising Committee. They will give people from Beaumont Leys the background to Special Olympics and an overview of the events and activities taking place during the Games week. Roadshow attendees will also be given the opportunity to ask questions about the Games and understand more about the role of a Special Olympics volunteer.
Wednesday’s roadshow will also focus on the badminton event which is being hosted by Babington Community College. Activities will give local people the opportunity to understand the role they can play in supporting the athletes, their families and putting on a fantastic event.
Steve Humphries, Special Olympics Leicester Games Director, said: “The Special Olympics Leicester roadshows are a really important element of our journey to the National Summer Games. Having local communities on board and engaged in the Games is an integral part of our programme and the legacy of
the Games. We are very much looking forward to sharing the passion and excitement behind the Games with our local communities.”
Lynn Senior, Volunteering Director for Special Olympics Leicester, added: “So far the responses from volunteers has been fantastic and we have already passed the 500 volunteer milestone with another 1000 volunteers to be recruited so we are looking to local communities to get behind the Games by signing up as volunteers.”
The Babington Community College roadshow is the sixth in a series of seven roadshows touring Leicestershire and Rutland.
