SPECIAL OLYMPICS TARGETS LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN VOLUNTEER CALL UP
Special Olympics Leicester today announced its programme of community roadshows, which will take place across Leicestershire and Rutland over the next eight weeks. The roadshows have been created to provide the latest information to local communities about the Special Olympics Great Britain 8th National Summer Games next year as well as encouraging local communities to sign up as volunteers for the Games which take place from the 21st to the 25th July in Leicester next year.
Seven roadshows will take place in total at locations across the county from October to December. Members from the Special Olympics Games Organising Committee will be present at each roadshow where they will give members of the local community the background to Special Olympics and an overview of the events and activities taking place during the Games week. Roadshow attendees will also be given the opportunity to ask questions about the Games and understand more about the role of a Special Olympics volunteer.
Steve Humphries, Special Olympics Leicester, Games Director, said: “The Special Olympics Leicester roadshows are a really important element of our journey to the National Summer Games. Having local communities on board and engaged in the Games is an integral part of our programme and the legacy of the Games. We are very much looking forward to sharing the passion and excitement behind the Games next year with our local communities.”
Lynn Senior, Volunteering Director for Special Olympics Leicester, added: “So far the responses from volunteers has been fantastic and we have already passed the 500 volunteer milestone with another 1000 volunteers to be recruited so we are looking to local communities to get behind the Games by signing up as volunteers.”
