500 VOLUNTEERS SIGN UP FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS GB NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES
Special Olympics Leicester Games Organising Committee has announced that over 500 volunteers have already signed up to participate in the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games next year. The milestone number of volunteers was passed just two months after the official one year countdown to the start of the Games and represents a third of the total number of volunteers required to stage the event.
Volunteers are fundamental to the success of the Games as support is needed for virtually every aspect of running the event, offering volunteering roles as varied as supporting the visiting teams and their families, assisting at sporting events, to helping with transport and making the sandwiches. Applications have been received from communities across Leicester, 18 Special Olympics regions across the country and even Greece!
Volunteers are the public face of the Games and well-briefed volunteers with a positive and friendly attitude will play a significant role in making the Games a success. Previous events have shown that if the volunteers have enjoyed the experience, many will want to continue their involvement in Special Olympics. The Games can therefore leave a legacy that will be of benefit to the city of Leicester’s Special Olympics programme.
Lynn Senior, Volunteering Director for Special Olympics Leicester, said: "Volunteers are the face, heart and soul of the games, so the response we’ve had from potential volunteers so far has been fantastic. Being a volunteer is a great way to learn new skills and to make a real difference to the thousands of athletes and their families coming to our city next year. We really have been overwhelmed by the speed and enthusiasm of the response!"
Throughout the month of November, Special Olympics Leicester volunteering team will begin the work of matching potential volunteers to specific roles and the training will then follow early next year.
