Birch Puts His Heart And SOL Into The Games

Monday 2nd March 2009

Last week Leicester City club ambassador Alan Birchenall celebrated his honour of Freedom of the City by announcing his chosen charity for his 29th Annual End of Season Run.

The Birch will be putting himself through the pain barrier this year for the Special Olympics, which will be held in Leicester this summer. The run will take place ahead of City’s final home game of the season - which sees them come up against Scunthorpe United on Friday, April 24.

The Birch said: “It’s great that the Special Olympics will be held in Leicester this year and I am delighted to be running for the Games.

“It is a fantastic cause and we should be extremely proud as a city to be hosting the Games in the summer. “One thing that I am pleased about this year is the fact that the run will take place in the evening. No doubt it will be a red-hot day, as always, but at least I will be able to avoid the midday sun. Let’s face it - I need all the help I can get!”

The Birch has raised well over £600,000 for local charities over the years - and was awarded the MBE for his efforts in 2002.

His charity run sees him attempt to run around the Walkers Stadium pitch for 90 minutes prior to the kick off of the last home match for the season. This year sees him attempt the feat for the 29th time.
