Introduction
 
Cycling is an exciting sporting event that tones muscles and strengthens the cardio-vascular system. Special Olympics offers events from 500 metre time trials to 40k road races.
 
Special Olympics athletes also can participate in Unified Sports® Cycling events. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a programme that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. In Unified Sports cycling, a tandem team consists of one Special Olympics athletes and one partner – the athlete or partner may assume either the driver position (front) or the stoker position (rear) on the tandem.
 
As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.
 
Competition Venue
 
Abbey Park, Abbey Park Road, Leicester
 
Abbey Park is Leicester’s premier park and lies approximately one mile north of the City centre. This beautiful park makes an attractive venue for Cycling. The Oval has a 700m closed circuit area and provision for seating. In addition, the park has excellent facilities with a large car park and level tarmac pathways throughout.

Car Parking
 
Athletes/Coaches:  From their drop off point at Entrance G, athletes and coaches will proceed to the athlete’s arena which is a 5 minutes walk (past the Abbey ruins), along the sign posted route and proceed to walk to The Oval. The area will be marshalled.
Officials: Officials will enter the venue via Entrance G as mentioned above and park in the designated car park.
Families: Most family members are expected to arrive at the park by public transport.  There is a pay and display car park on the opposite side of the park.
Spectators: There is limited parking for members of the public at the park and therefore they will arrive at the park either on foot or by public transport.  On arrival at the entrance gate, spectators will be directed to the Oval which will be sign posted.
Honoured Guests: From their designated drop off point, guests will enter The Oval via the designated footpath as signposted.
Media: From their designated parking bays the media will enter The Oval via the designated footpath as signposted.
Volunteers: From their arrival point all volunteers will gain access to The Oval via a sign posted footpath
 
Catering
 
Abbey Park cafe located alongside the cycle track area will serve hot and cold snacks which will be available for sale daily.
 
The park is approximately 10 minutes walk from the city centre where a full range of eateries are available.
 
Equipment/Uniform
 
All participating riders, regardless of category, shall be required to wear their own bicycle helmets. Athletes will not be permitted to compete without a bicycle helmet. Helmets must clearly display a CE (in compliance with the European Personal Protective Equipment Directive 89/686/EEC or EN 1078) or SNELL (in compliance with the United States CPSC standard) label to meet the required safety standards.
 
No athlete will be allowed to compete in clothing that may foul on the bike or become a hazard to any other riders.
 
Head Coaches are reminded that competition uniform must comply with Special Olympics Rules on sponsorship (for details see SO Summer Sports Rules, Article I Section X – Commercial Messages (pages 33 -34).
 
All athletes are required to provide their own bikes.
 
All bicycles shall be inspected for suitability by a certified/licensed mechanic or qualified bicycle shop mechanic prior to their first race, event (TT or RR). Any standard bicycle that complies with safety standards may be ridden.
 
Any bicycle in an unsatisfactory condition may be rejected by the organisers of the cycling event.
 
Athletes who experience mechanical problems may change any or part of the bicycle or the entire bicycle, if necessary, to finish the race (the replacement bicycle must also pass through the checking procedure). Assistance is allowed. An athlete is allowed a push to restart. The push start zone is approximately 10 metres.

Competition Rules
 
The Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Cycling shall govern all Special Olympics competitions. As an international sports program, Special Olympics has created these rules based upon Union Cycliste International (UCI) rules for cycling found at http://www.uci.ch/templates/UCI/UCI2/layout.asp?MenuId=MTkzNgUCI or National Governing Body (NGB) rules shall be employed except when they are in conflict with the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Cycling or Article I. In such cases, the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules for Cycling shall apply.
