Introduction to the Sport
Special Olympics Kayaking is a flat-water racing event where athletes compete over 200m and 500m courses, either on their own or as a pair with another athlete. Kayaking is one of the newest Special Olympics sports, requiring a basic foundation of skills in order to be safe and proficient. Effective strokes are powered by large muscle groups of the torso, not the arms. Modern kayaks come in a wide variety of designs and materials for specialised purposes. Special Olympics kayaking events include the ‘tourist’ division (using a standard touring kayak, stable, ideally suited for straight line paddling and readily available to event organisers to provide) and ‘professional’ division (racing kayaks which are longer and narrower and thus much faster, but which can also be more unstable).

Pyranha Master 2 kayak
Single touring kayaks and paddles will be used for all practice and competition sessions. The kayak selected for this event is the Pyranha Master 2.
Hull Design
Manufactured from the same materials as high spec WW kayaks the Master 2 gives excellent durability and strength in a hull shape that provides great forward speed and control but still manages to be manoeuvrable.
Internal Bouyancy
The foam blocks in the front and rear of the Master 2 give it the ability to float full of water.
Cockpit
The Master 2 has a wide and lengthy cockpit. With the shape of the kayak this provides the maximum possible internal room and aids entry and exit and provides comfort.
Retractable Keg
The integral skeg when lowered will assist the Master 2 in tracking in a straight line. It is lowered and raised by a simple rope, shock cord and cleat system.
Footrest
The Master 2 is fitted with a ‘Sharks Teeth’ footrest system, which provides you with 5 different positions with no adjustment necessary.
Bouyancy Jackets & Paddles
- Bouyancy jackets will be provided and must be worn for all practise and competition sessions.
- All of the above items of equipment will be supplied for practise and competition sessions. This is to ensure that the Kayaks and Bouyancy Jackets used meet all safety requirements. It also ensures that all athletes compete on levels terms using the same specification kayak. For these reasons personal kayaks and buoyancy jackets may not be used.
- Spray decks will not be used.
- For this event it is not deemed necessary for athletes to wear safety helmets.
However, athletes may use their personal paddles.
