Introduction to the Sport

Special Olympics Powerlifting is about much more than squats, bench presses and deadlifts.  It is about barriers, perseverance and success.  Training, determined and attitude determine the fine line between success and failure.  The bar may test an athlete’s physical abilities, but an internal desire to improve – to not settle for less – is the drive behind the strain and dedication of the sport.  Special Olympics powerlifters are eligible to compete in three lifts: the bench press, the Deadlift and the squat, or in combinations.

As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.  Note that Special Olympics athletes must be 16 years of age before competing in Powerlifting.

Competition Venue

The Peepul Centre
Orchardson Road
Leicester
LE4 6DP

Powerlifting is being held at The Peepul Centre in the Auditorium.

The Peepul Centre is a 60,000 square foot flagship community led regeneration project in Leicester designed by signature London architects Andrzej Blonski Architects.

The concept has been developed and pioneered over ten years by Belgrave Baheno Women's Organisation, a Leicester City based community organisation with a membership of over 5000 women and girls.

The site is located at the gateway to Belgrave's "Golden Mile," at Orchardson Avenue, and will attract over two hundred and twenty thousand users per year when fully operational. This landmark building will open in late autumn 2005.

The Peepul Centre concept of sustainable community development was conceived in the early 90's. The 'thinking' behind the project has consistently been ahead of its time. As a result of its visionary purpose the Peepul Centre has been adopted as a Flagship project by a wide number of agencies including the Millennium Commission and East Midlands Development Agency.

On 3 storeys with upper level mezzanine gymnasium the development will have a huge central atrium with a floating staircase, a 100-cover restaurant, cyber café and dance studio, a community wing with children's development centre, training and conferencing, health and well being wing and fitness and leisure suite. The main reception floor is designed by artist Bhajan Hunjan. The artist wall and window is designed by Nayan Kulkarni and five large canvases focused on the Indo-Caribbean experience will be created by Jamaican born artist Howard Angus.

The centre incorporates a 350-seat auditorium with tilting raked seating. This unique feature, the first of its kind in the UK, will enable the area underneath the seating to be fully utilised as flat floor space for weddings and other social or business events.
