Introduction to the Sport
Speed, strength and smarts are three essential keys to unlocking success in any sport, and Special Olympics sailing is no different. The best sailors develop all three aspects of their racing to their fullest potential.
Special Olympics sailing has training and competition opportunities for individual and teams of Special Olympics athletes; as well as Special Olympics Unified Sports® crews. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. In Unified Sports sailing, crews shall be comprised of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. If the boat is typically raced by a crew of 2, one member will be an individual with intellectual disabilities; if the boat is typically raced by a crew of 3 or more, the majority of the crew shall be individuals with intellectual disabilities.
As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.
Competition Venue
Rutland Sailing Club was formed when Rutland Water was created over 30 years ago and is one of only five National Sailing Academies in the UK. Rutland Water is one of the largest man-made stretches of water in Europe, as big as Windermere and set in some of Britain’s loveliest countryside. The Club has three permanent racing courses laid out on the water, and can set a full Olympic course which allows racing to take place in practically any conditions. Facilities include a fully refurbished clubhouse, changing rooms and bar/restaurant.
The Clubhouse has a large open viewing deck from which the whole of the racing courses can be viewed. The club has hosted National and International Disabled sailing events in the past. The last International Disabled event was held in August 2006 and UK All Classes Disabled Regatta took place in July 2007 and August 2008.
Within 3 miles of Rutland Sailing Club is Anglian Water’s Rutland Water Sports and Training Centre near Whitwell Harbour, which is an ideal location and site to host the Kayaking event in 2009.
Outdoor Pursuits Centre was used in 1989 Games
