Introduction to the Sport

Because of the wide array of swimming events offered, aquatics is appropriate for a range of ages and ability levels. Aquatics competition events are based on a variety of strokes. Special Olympics also offers events for lower ability level athletes to train and compete in basic aquatics skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to longer competitive events.

Special Olympics athletes also can participate in Special Olympics Unified Sports® aquatics relay events. Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. In Unified Sports Aquatics, a relay team would consist of two Special Olympics athletes and two partners.

As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions

Competition Venue

Braunstone Leisure Centre
2 Hamelin Road
Leicester
LE3 1JN

Completed in 2004 this award-winning facility is the city’s newest leisure centre. The state of the art venue could easily accommodate a number of sports. With a 1 x 8 lane 25 m pool and a 1 x 4 lane 25 m pool, this is the obvious choice for swimming. The sports hall accommodates six badminton courts and spectator seating for up to 400 people. The centre also has good disabled access and car parking facilities.

Please note that because of the seating capacity, seats in the pool will be reserved for families/spectators only. Seating for teams will be provided in the adjacent sports hall which is where award ceremonies will also be held. It is planned to have a CCTV link between the pool and the sports hall.

Car Parking

Athletes/Coaches:  From their drop off point in the bus bays in the car park, athletes and coaches will proceed into the venue via the main entrance at the front of the venue.  This is a very short walk; the surface is even and marked out with pedestrian crossings to ensure safety from moving vehicles.  The area will be marshalled.
Officials: Officials will enter the venue via the main entrance at the front of the venue.
Families: Most family members are expected to arrive at the venue by public transport.  On arrival at the main entrance, families will be directed to the Family area at Queensmead Primary School which will encompass the schools sports hall and a large marquee.
Spectators: There is limited parking for members of the public at the venue and therefore they will arrive at the venue either on foot or by public transport.  On arrival at the main entrance spectators will be directed to the Family Centre.
Honoured Guests: From their designated drop off point, guests will enter the venue through the main entrance at the front and head towards the spectator area.  They will be met and escorted by a key volunteer at all times.
Media: From their designated parking bays media will be directed to the main entrance.
Volunteers: From their arrival point all volunteers will enter via the main entrance at the front of the building and go straight to the venue operations centre in the creche.
