Introduction to the Sport
Because of the wide array of swimming events offered, aquatics is appropriate for a range of ages and ability levels. Aquatics competition events are based on a variety of strokes. Special Olympics also offers events for lower ability level athletes to train and compete in basic aquatics skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to longer competitive events.
Special Olympics athletes also can participate in Special Olympics Unified Sports® aquatics relay events. Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on sports teams for training and competition. In Unified Sports Aquatics, a relay team would consist of two Special Olympics athletes and two partners.
As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions

Competition Venue
Completed in 2004 this award-winning facility is the city’s newest leisure centre. The state of the art venue could easily accommodate a number of sports. With a 1 x 8 lane 25 m pool and a 1 x 4 lane 25 m pool, this is the obvious choice for swimming. The sports hall accommodates six badminton courts and spectator seating for up to 400 people. The centre also has good disabled access and car parking facilities.
Please note that because of the seating capacity, seats in the pool will be reserved for families/spectators only. Seating for teams will be provided in the adjacent sports hall which is where award ceremonies will also be held. It is planned to have a CCTV link between the pool and the sports hall.

Officials: Officials will enter the venue via the main entrance at the front of the venue.

Volunteers: From their arrival point all volunteers will enter via the main entrance at the front of the building and go straight to the venue operations centre in the creche.
Catering
A Family Centre is located at Queensmead School (next door to Braunstone Leisure Centre). On sale at the Centre will be a range of hot and cold snacks and beverages throughout competition times. In addition, Braunstone Leisure Centre has a number of vending machines offering hot/cold drinks, crips and cholcate etc. Within Braunstone Leisure Centre is 'The Street' an open, light and airy space which also encompasses a small cafe serving hot/cold snacks and drinks during competition times.

Swimmers are required to wear swimsuits which are within the guidelines prescribed by the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA). Suits should not be transparent, even when wet. Female athletes should wear a one piece tank suit. Males should not wear cut-offs or longer type suits; the suits should be the ‘brief’ type racing suit. Swim caps are required and teams competing in relay events must wear swim caps of the same colour with the team logo.
All swimmers should have pool shoes for use inside the centre. Towels will not be provided.
Head Coaches are reminded that competition uniform must comply with Special Olympics Rules on sponsorship (for details see SO Summer Sports Rules, Article I Section X – Commercial Messages (pages 33-34).
